Ep 67: Stop Outsourcing Thinking to ChatGPT with Ruth Shrauner

AI is moving fast, but most service providers are still using it like a glorified search engine.

In this episode, I sat down with Ruth Shrauner to talk about what’s actually happening behind the scenes with AI content systems, client “brains,” Claude vs ChatGPT, and why so many agencies are still completely missing the point. We got into the real frustrations with AI-generated content lately, how to create better outputs without sounding robotic, and what service providers need to understand before they hand over their messaging to a tool.

This conversation is especially relevant if you’re a coach, consultant, strategist, creative, or boutique agency owner trying to scale sustainably without becoming a full-time content machine.

We also talked about the hidden labor behind building AI systems that actually work, the danger of founders outsourcing discernment, and how systems thinking changes the way you grow a service business.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode

  • Why most agencies still don’t have a true “client brain”

  • The difference between using AI strategically vs lazily

  • Claude vs ChatGPT and why the output quality keeps changing

  • The rise of “AI slop” and how to spot it instantly

  • Why Ruth is calling out the number 47 in AI-generated content

  • How service providers can use AI without losing trust or authority

  • Building proposal systems that speed up sales

  • The hidden complexity behind creating scalable AI workflows

  • Why founders still need discernment, even with advanced tools

  • The difference between easy systems and simple systems

  • Productizing services without overcomplicating your business

  • Why scaling sustainably requires focus, not more tools

Why AI Isn’t the Strategy

One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is that AI is not the strategy.

AI can absolutely improve efficiency, organize information, and accelerate execution, but it cannot replace strategic thinking. Ruth explained how shocking it is that many agencies are still operating without centralized systems for client messaging, positioning, case studies, and buyer psychology.

Even if you want to write every word manually, having a searchable, organized “brain” for a client changes the quality of your work dramatically.

That’s the real opportunity.

Not replacing humans.
Not automating your personality.
Not pumping out more content.

Creating systems that make your expertise easier to access and execute consistently.

The AI Slop Problem Is Getting Worse

We also talked openly about something many people are quietly frustrated by right now.

AI outputs are starting to sound… weird.

Overly polished.
Predictable.
Repetitive.
Generic.

Ruth specifically called out how Claude has shifted lately, reverting into what she described as “AI slop,” even inside highly trained projects with extensive brand context.

And honestly, if you create authority-driven content, your audience notices this immediately.

Service providers rely heavily on trust and credibility. If your messaging suddenly feels robotic or generic, it weakens your positioning fast.

That’s why discernment matters more than ever.

The best operators are not blindly publishing AI outputs.
They’re curating, refining, and strategically guiding the process.

The Hidden Work Behind “Fast” Systems

One of my favorite parts of this conversation was talking about how deceptive great systems can look from the outside.

People see someone generate a proposal, a month of content, or messaging assets quickly and assume the process itself is simple.

But the speed comes from the setup.

The real work is:

  • Mining brand voice

  • Organizing strategic context

  • Building frameworks

  • Refining prompts

  • Testing outputs

  • Updating systems as models evolve

As Ruth said, “It looks simple, but it’s not.”

That applies to almost every scalable service system.

The visible output might look effortless, but the backend thinking is where the value lives.

Productized Services Need Better Systems

We also got into proposals, offer systems, and productizing services in a smarter way.

One thing I see constantly with service providers is overcomplicating delivery while under-systematizing sales.

Ruth shared how she uses AI systems to streamline proposals and content workflows while still keeping strategy and positioning at the center.

I also shared how my own proposal process evolved into a structured system because consistency matters more than reinvention every single time.

That’s the beauty of productized services.

You stop rebuilding from scratch.
You refine.
You optimize.
You improve conversion through systems instead of hustle.

Founders Still Need Discernment

This might be the most important point in the entire episode.

Founders cannot outsource discernment.

You still need to know:

  • What good messaging sounds like

  • What aligns with your brand

  • What your audience actually cares about

  • What should be prioritized

  • What is worth building versus what is just interesting

AI can support decision-making.
It cannot replace judgment.

And honestly, the service providers who understand that are going to scale much more sustainably over the next few years.
